The Fan has Arrived

Posted on

I got my fan today.  It looks so cool!  I’m very happy with it and can’t wait to transform it into Temari’s weapon.  It’s about 3 feet high and really wide.  I’m about 5’3”-5’4” and when open the fan spans from the floor to the mid to top of my head when I hold it sideways.  I love the design on it and almost wish I wasn’t using it as a prop since it’s so pretty.

So far my idea is to cover the fan with white fabric, I would glue the fabric to the painting, then add the purple moons via purple fabric and Heat ‘N Bond.  I don’t know how well it would work, but it sure beats trying to paint over the elaborate design on the fan.  My only concern is whether or not I’ll be able to close the fan with the added fabric.  I would use a white broadcloth type fabric and layer it at least twice to cover the design, hopefully completely.  here would end up being around three additional layers of fabric, including the three moons, if I used the fabric method.

I really don’t want to paint the fan, and I don’t have the money to spend on paint right now.  So far it looks like my best bet will be to use fabric.  I have a bit of extra white fabric laying around and I might have some purple.  If not it shouldn’t be too hard to find and I should be able to afford it.  I still have over a month until the con, so I’ll think about my options more and talk to a few prop makers as well.  I’m hoping to get the fan done as soon as possible so I can get a preliminary shoot before the con, but I might have to go without the fan which is ok for a preliminary shoot.

Whom to Cosplay

The vexing question of whom to cosplay ever looms in the cosplayer’s mind, of which I am no exception.  The more I cosplay the more difficult I find it to choose whom to cosplay.  My most recent dilemma is between two of my favorite characters.  I adore both equally and am having a very hard time deciding which one to cosplay first.  It is inevitable that I will cosplay both.

I am forced to choose between Raven and Sango for my fourth cosplay goal for 2011.  Raven is from Teen Titans the animated series while Sango is from Inuyasha.  I must either choose Raven in her white outfit from episode 52 or Sango in her Demon Slayer outfit.  To make it worse, I like both of the outfits as well.  Though Sango is winning a bit more, I am in a quandary.

To help with my dilemma, I have created a poll.  It is on the right hand side of my blog under my profile and will be in effect for a month (until February 11th).  You, as the reader, can vote on which option you would prefer.  Now like any good cosplayer facing the huge decision of whom to cosplay would, I have included pictures of both characters at the bottom of this post.

Voyage of the Dawn Treader Update

Even though my sewing machine broke, I’ve been able to work on my Lucy’s Dawn Treader outfit.  It’s coming a long well, especially since it’s been hand sewn.  Most of the pieces are either in progress or close to completion.  I even have some pictures!

So far I’ve been able to complete the base for the breeches.  They look wonderful!!!  I made then out of velvet and a handmade pattern.  It’s one of the first times I’ve used a handmade pattern so I’m really happy with how they turned out.

I still have to add embroidery on the side of the legs and a back closure.  I kinda hurried to get these done so they could be worn for a costume party the weekend.  Because of that I still have a bit to do for the premiere in December.  It shouldn’t take me too long.  I only hope I’m able to apple the designs correctly and get it done in time.  The last thing I want is half embroidered pants for the premiere.

Because it’s such a huge embroidery project, I’ve been working on the jerkin as well.  I almost have the entire front and left side embroidered.  I just have to add the wide band around the bottom both are gone.  The back is going to take a while because of all the embroidery it has, but the right side should be a breeze.

The jerkin looks a lot better on my sister than on the dress form.  I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out in the end.  I can’t wait!  I’m just hoping it’ll look right.  It’s my first time majorly modifying a pattern so I’m really nervous.  I’ll probably have to modify it a bit more to make the sleeves just right.  Other than that I’m happy with the way it’s turning out.

My final piece for this post is a cloak I made to go with the outfit.  It has nothing to do with the new Narnia movie.  Instead, it is an original design for my sister.  I was originally going to use the fabric for Lucy’s red dress in Prince Caspian, but I decided to modify the design and make it an interchangeable cloak that can go with many time periods and outfits.  Here it is!

Thank you again for reading.  Keep in touch to see what happens as I find a new machine and scramble to complete my Halloween commissions in time.  See ya soon!

Sewing Machine Trouble

What a hassle these machines can be.  It’s barely a week till Halloween and my darn machine blows a fuse and stops working.  Darn thing!  Now I have three costumes for make pieces for and no machine.  *growl and pout*  Nevertheless, I’ll get them done.  I’ve already finished hand sewing my sister’s Lucy pants, and she might wear another shirt for the time being.  I’m still trying to figure out how to make the rest in time.
