Cosplay Plans for the First Con of 2011

Posted on

My first con for 2011 is coming up in May so I’m making cosplays for it of  course.  It’ll be my first con attending as an attendee, and I’m really excited!  It’s a four day con so I’m hoping to debut a new cosplay each day.  So far I’ve got four cosplays picked out with a fifth as a backup.

temarichanFor day one, I want to go as Temari from Naruto Shippuden.  I really like her black kimono and from what I’ve seen of her character, she’s pretty awesome.  I’m going to watch more of Shippuden to get a better idea of her character, but she’s the first Naruto character I’ve wanted to cosplay besides Sakura.  I’m buying this cosplay since I found a really good deal from another cosplayer and it would be more cost efficient to buy it.  I’ll post pictures when I get the costume hopefully within the next two weeks.  I’m going to make her wig and shoes myself, but I don’t quite know what I’ll do for her fan.  I’ll figure it out as time goes on.  I’m stoked and nervous about this cosplay all at the same time.  It’ll be my first time cosplaying a popular character from a new anime.

AnnaFF4TAY

I also want to cosplay Anna from Final Fantasy 4: The After Years on day one because there is going to be a Final Fantasy photo shoot that day.  Her outfit consists of an ankle-length dress with a blue sash, waist-length orange hair, and an orange barrette.  I can probably buy the dress and either find or make the sash.  The barrette shouldn’t be too hard to find either.  As for the hair, I should be able to use my own since it’s a similarish color now that I dyed it.

vlcsnap-2011-03-17-06h49m21s5For day two, I want to go as Kotomi from Clannad.  I’m planning on wearing a white sun dress, since she wears a white sun dress in one of the episodes and I don’t have much money to spare.  I’m going to look around at second hand and thrift stores for this cosplay.  If it doesn’t work then I’ll try for another one of her casual outfits.  I’ll be styling her wig too which I am excited for too.  I can’t wait to try out my ideas for how to make her hairstyle work while staying as true to the anime as possible.

1. Akari_MizunashiDay three will be Akari from ARIA the Animation.  I absolutely love her summer uniform and can’t wait to wear it.  So far the costume is 2/3 done.  I just have to make the fuku, shoes, glove, and hat.  I’m ordering a new prestyled wig cause I’m new to wig styling and it’s more cost efficient if I do.  I don’t have a lot to say about this cosplay because I’ve been talking about it a lot in my other posts.

1l3nzh0m Day four I’ll be one of two potential cosplays, either Maria Ross from Fullmetal Alchemist or Sheeta from Castle in the Sky.  I say one of two because I don’t know if I’ll have the Maria cosplay done in time.  I also thought of having Haruhi from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya as a back up but that will depend on finances.  I found one that I can buy for a good price, but I don’t know if I’ll have enough money or not yet.  I’ll also have to buy a wig for it now that I’ve dyed my hair.  I don’t think Haruhi will end up being an option.  Sheeta Pazu 6

Three potential cosplays, Sheeta and long haired Haruhi.

As I said I’m really excited for this con.  I’m going there to have a great time and meet lots of new people.  There are a whole bunch of things I’d like to do at the con,  like group photo shoots, a formal dinner/ball, and the cosplay contest/masquerade.  I want to enter my Akari cosplay in the cosplay contest/masquerade.  I’m a little nervous about doing so, but I’ll just do my best.  I might make a few group/photo shoot cosplays as well.  I still have a lot to do to prepare for this con especially if my friend(s) want to cosplay with me, but if that happens it’s for a different post.  Thank you so much for reading, and I hope to see you again soon.  ^_^

To the glory of God the father and Jesus his son.

Signing off, Narnian

Sheeta Wig Report

It’s here!!!!!!  Finally, after three weeks, my is here.  The company was having a hard time with back orders from Japan, .  It looks gorgeous!!!  I can’t believe how long it is too!!  IMG_2470 I can’t wait to start styling the wig!!! I have to braid the wig then cut and style the bangs.  I’ve never cut bangs before so I’m really nervous.  But I’m excited and know it’ll turn out well.

Troubles and Annoyances (Sheeta Progress Report 2)

Well my Sheeta costume is nearly done.  The pants are complete and just as awesome as I’d hoped.  The shirt is another story.  I thought I had the shirt nearly perfect, but I was wrong.  Turns out the shirt ended up being too short waisted.  On top of that, the pants don’t go up high enough to compensate for the shirt and I’m out of the shirt fabric.  ;_;  Not to mention that I’m pretty much out of money because I have to pay for the convention pass as well as have a bit of spending money for the convention.

To help with my problem, I made the belt a bit bigger than need be.  I’m also considering adding hooks and eyes to the bottom of the top and the top of the bottoms.  Hopefully that should keep the shirt where it needs to be without pulling on the pants too much, though I fear the latter to be the actual case.  My other option is to attach the belt to the top somehow without making the attachment permanent.  I was thinking of using either hooks and eyes or snaps to this idea.

Other than that, my project is going well.  So far, except for the mishaps, it’s turned out better than anticipated.  I was a little worried about using the patterns I chose, especially since I had to modify them moderately.  They turned out so much better than my fears allotted.  I just have to remember that collars adjust the length of a garment by at least two inches.  Life lessons, those are well learned and adapted.

They’re done!!!!!!!  My pink poofy pants are done!!!!  It took me five hours but after careful evaluation and reconsideration of the pattern I planned to use I arrived at my final product.    spantsfront spantsback spantsside

Now that Sheeta’s pants are done, I can move on to her poofy yellow top and bright orange belt.  I found a pattern to use as a base for her shirt.  I’m going to guesstimate on her belt, and I still have not idea how to make the silver clasp.

New Costume Line Up

Since August is coming up, I’m getting ready for the local convention that is occurring.  This convention is more of what I like to call a geek convention.  It’s where people of various geeky interests (such as cosplay, role playing games, video game players, anime fans, manga readers, and the like) get together for a three day extravaganza celebrating a whole hoard of geeky pursuits.  If you are like me and don’t mind being called a geek because that is what you are then you should understand my usage of the term geek and geeky.  It is not meant in a derogatory way but merely to express that conventions like the above mentioned are out of the ordinary and for out of the ordinary people, mainly fans of out of the ordinary things like Star Wars or Fullmetal Alchemist.  I apologize if my use of the term geek offends you.

Anyway, as I was saying, I am preparing for this said convention.  Since I love to sew and am a professed geek, I am making a few costumes for the convention.  There I said it.  I’M MAKING COSTUMES TO WEAR TO A GEEK CONVENTION.  Even though I’m slightly embarrassed to say so, that is what I am doing.  I’m so very excited!!!!!!!  This will be my first time wearing any of my cosplays out in public, hence the slight embarrassment.

I will be making three to possibly four cosplays for this event.  My list is as follows:

Sophia Forrester’s vice captain uniform from Last Exile.

as_36 as_39   display_600_spheres_ppp_alexsophia

Sheeta’s pirate uniform from Laputa:Castle in the Sky.

                          Sheeta Pazulaputa-view-from-above

Fio from Miyazaki’s Porco Rosso

               FioWOW!!! Look at this island

And an undecided possible fourth.

I will be updating on these costumes as progress is made.  If I go, I might be making a Star Wars costume for Star Wars in Concert in a couple weeks.  It is still uncertain as to whether or not I’m going.  It’s a bit expensive but totally worth it.  Since I have camp this Monday through Friday, I won’t have much time to work on a costume for the event.  If I do go I would like to be in costume.  I’m still not sure what costume I would possibly make either.  Ah, decisions, decisions.  What ever will I do with you.  Decisions, you can make things very difficult some times.

Mood: Contemplative  =_=

Fabric, Sales, and Good Deals

Posted on

Just the other Friday was my birthday.  It’s my big 1-8 so Mom asks me what I want to do for a special birthday treat.  Naturally, my mind starts racing as ideas flood my mind and excitement builds within my veins.  My mind locks on an idea and, with big excited eyes, I practically screamed, “FABRIC STORE!!!!!!!!!!!”  Mom rolled her eyes while she explained that I’d be at the store for far to long, would miss my game night with my friends, and spend far to much money.  Still, she took me anyway, after I promised that I wouldn’t take more than four hours and would spend as little money as possible.

So we went to the store.  I was cramped horribly for time while my mind whirled with all the new costume possibilities and fabric combinations.  Fortunately, a sale was occurring and everything I wanted was on sale.  I was in total h-e-a-v-e-n.  Frantically, I raced about the store grabbing patterns and fabric and notions.  Meanwhile, the fabric cutting line grew and grew.  There was no way I would make it out of store in time.  Fortunately, Mom knew that too.  By the time I’d finished getting all the necessary materials for the costumes I was working on, the fabric cutting line had backed up half way across the store.  There was maybe a half hour left till my get-together.  I was going to be late.  Still, I persevered through the long cutting line wait and the fabric cutting process.  According to the clock, I was late to my party as I walked to the checkout line.  The line was very short.  I made it out in semi-record time while saving over four hundred dollars.  Woot for fabric and pattern sales!!!!

Luckily, for me, traffic was moving quickly.  I ended up arriving at the game night four minutes after it started.  Everyone else had gotten there late too.  My friends and Mom surprised me by turning the get-together into a mini surprise birthday party, complete with cake and ice cream and pizza.  Everyone had a wonderful time.

All that was said to say that I now have all the materials to make Belle’s green library dress and Sheeta’s pirate outfit.  Mom surprised me by buying the fabric and notions as my birthday present!!!!  Both costumes are officially in progress now.

Also, the theme for the costume dinner is Disney® and it is on the 23rd of this month (April).  I am working on Belle’s green dress as I type.  Expect the next few updates to be a bit longer that usual and cram packed with info, especially since I have less time to make Belle’s costume.  As always, thank you for reading and stay tuned to find out what happens next.  *^_^*

It Happened, Again…

Posted on

The creative mind never stops. Just when I think, I have my costume list figured out for the year more costumes wiggle their way into my head. It happened again. I added another 3 costumes to my yearly list and another 10 plus to my total list of 80 costumes. *’_’* I really like to sew.

So, adding to the list of my costumes to make for the year are 2 brand new costumes. I just know I’m forgetting one. Like usual, some costumes will have deadlines while other costumes will not.

The first on my list of additions is kinda up in the air. If I make it, it will be for a costume dinner with my graduation class. So far, I do not know what the theme is or when the dinner will be. Therefore, the deadline and production are subject to change. However, who knows, if I windup liking the costume enough, I might just make it for fun.

Anyway, the first costume is none other than Belle’s green dress from Disney ®’s Beauty and the Beast. I still cannot believe I’m considering this costume because it’s a wittle embarwassing. #___# I’ve never really been into the whole princess thing before so, for me, this is a stretch. I’ve nearly always liked pretty dresses and outfits though, so that helps a lot.

Back on subject, Belle’s green dress is a rather obscure outfit. Most people don’t remember it being in the movie. I didn’t remember it either until I read the Wikipeadia article on Belle and the article briefly mentioned the dress.

Her green dress is the one she wears when Beast shows her his library after they ate lunch. I thought the costume very fitting since I love books and reading and libraries (I really love libraries) as well. I also really like the fact that it is the least made of all her costumes. Guess which one is first. -_^

So, without further ado, drum roll please, here is the costume!

I love the color choices. The costume incorporates two tones of my top four favorite colors. The composition is both adorable and modest! Not to mention, it’s just plain cute! The cloak is an added bonus. That said I would now move on to the next costume on my list.

Second on my new list of costumes is Sheeta’s pirate outfit from Miyazaki’s Castle in the Sky. I really like the coloring and design of this costume. Pink pants, how über cool is that!

I love how the cool pastels mix nicely with the warm orange belt and red hair band and ties. As for the cut, it is loose and flowy, perfect for windy spring days aboard an air pirate ship. Finally, the entire composition is both fun and appealing, not to mention flattering. The shoes and hair are wonderful added bonuses. It is a necessity for my costuming wardrobe.

All that said, my new costume list is complete. I still can’t figure out what the third costume is, or will be, so that will have to wait for another post. I really like both of the costumes stated thus far. I can’t wait to make them! I’ve even started with the preparations!

As for deadlines, Belle’s green dress and blue cloak must be complete before the graduation costume dinner, which will probably be in April sometime. I’m hoping to wear Sheeta’s pirate outfit to the same convention that I’m wearing Sophia’s vice captain uniform to. The convention is in August, but I plan to have both costumes done in either June or July.

There it is, my new costume list for the summer. I might add a few, no more than three, to my list if I complete the list early. Then I still have outfits to make for others, so I will probably stick to this list of eight. Well, thank you for reading! I hope you stay tuned to find out how I do in my costuming endeavors.
